  • Workshop: Head Wraps by Gift Wraps

    In conjunction with African-Print Fashion Now! and to honor National Cancer Survivors Day, Gift Wraps is presenting a hands-on workshop teaching you how to wrap and wear different head wrap adornment styles. These styles will include double braids, crown, bow, bun, and more.

    Gift Wraps co-Founders Kenya Adjekum-Bradshaw and Rochelle Griffin will also share information about the history of Ankara prints and the importance of headwraps in fashion.

    The cost to attend the workshop is $10, which includes museum admission and a chance to view African-Print Fashion Now!

    Join us for a special gallery talk about Black Resistance: Ernest C. Withers and the Civil Rights Movement led by Charlie Newman with special guest Otis Sanford.

    Sanford is the Hardin Chair of Excellence in Economic and Managerial Journalism at the University of Memphis. Learn more about him here. Copies of his new book, From Boss Crump to King Willie: How Race Changed Memphis Politics, will be available for purchase.

    Newman was one of the attorneys who represented Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. just before his death in 1968, and his gallery talk will focus on his experiences during that time as reflected in the photographs in the exhibition.

  • Café Conversations: African-Print Fashion Now! Talkin’ Taste, Fashion, & Globalization

    African textile artists have always used the continent’s print traditions to respond to political, economic and social issues.

    This Café Conversation, with Dr. Earnestine Jenkins, Professor of Art History-Visual Culture Studies at the University of Memphis, will guide us through the historical events and encounters that have influenced—and continue to influence—  global fashion culture.

    Free. No reservations are required.


    Café Conversations are held the third Wednesday of every month and will coincide with a tour of a related special exhibition or works from the permanent collection. Led by local Memphians, the series will encourage visitors to contemplate real life issues by drawing comparisons to themes in art.
