Café Conversations coincide with a tour of a related special exhibition or works from the Brooks permanent collection. Led by Memphians, the series encourages visitors to contemplate real life issues by drawing comparisons to themes in art.
For this Café Conversation, O’Keeffe and Hawai‘i : the Merchandising of an Artist and a State, Dr. Patricia Daigle, Director of the Martha and Robert Fogelman Galleries of Contemporary Art at the University of Memphis, will draw a unique connection between the merchandising and production of Georgia O’Keeffe’s artistic output and Hawai’i, the vacation destination spot. Through discussion and a visit to the galleries, we will consider how these two subjects were groomed to become ideals of American culture, and what facets of their unique identities have been lost in their merchandising.
